What kind of bee or wasp has a large black body and red / orange wings?
I live in the coastal regions of South Texas, and I was something of a big black bees, wasps, with rather long red / orange wings. I have seen them, they tend to remain low in the grass. I would like know the particular species. I tried the Internet, but no luck. Any help is welcome. Michael 971, Thank you for your help, you are absolutely correct. Sound like a Tarantula Hawk wasp. They live in the southwest. They hunt spiders. Deceive them by the spiders vibrate the web to make the spider think that it is an insect trapped Then / she stings the spider digs a hole, puts the spider in her, and she lays her eggs on the paralyzed spider. They have spines that can be very painful for the people. Wasps may be interesting to watch. Last summer I had made a different kind of wasp (great golden digger wasp), the holes in my garden. They would bring a thorn locust, crickets and grasshoppers, and she is back in their holes. The wasps in my garden were not aggressive, and I could sit and dig their holes and bring katydids. Any other kind of wasp hunts a different kind of insects or spiders
